Lion Cubs Judo

Our Lion Cubs program is a professional and engaging martial arts program for children aged 4-6.  These classes focus on developing the ABC building blocks of movement. These building blocks are:

- Agilty

- Balance

- Co-ordination

In addition, the Lion Cubs will learn:
– spatial awareness
– rolling and falling safely
– strength and fitness
– flexibility

– basic grappling skills

– as well as make new friends!

What happens in a Lion Cubs class?

This class involves the children playing warm-up games, practicing judo techniques on a Lion teddy bear, as well as a variety of high-energy wrestling-based games that will help develop their agility, balance, and coordination. â€‹

The class finishes with each participant receiving a sticker in their sticker book.

What age is Lion Cubs for?

Our Lion Cubs program is for kids aged 4-6 years. Afterwards, they can progress into the kids' judo program.

Why don't you offer kids BJJ classes?

BJJ and Judo are very similar. BJJ focuses on ground fighting while Judo primarily focuses on throws and takedowns. However, you will find that both our Judo and BJJ classes focus on both of these elements. The only major difference is that in BJJ we teach child strangles and armbars - this is the main reason why we teach BJJ to 10 years and older. We would much prefer to leave the armbars and strangles to children at a higher maturity age.

What about gradings?

Rather than a traditional belt-based grading system we have adopted a t-shirt system. Essentially, every time your child progresses up a belt, they will be awarded with a new t-shirt with a different coloured belt on it. This not only shows their progression, but will help them ease into the kids' judo classes when they are old enough.

What should my child wear to a Lion Cubs class?

Please wear a t-shirt/rashie and a pair of pants (like trackies). If your child comes straight from school can you please empty their pockets of sand from the sand pit :)

What should my child wear to a Judo class?

For the gi classes the coaches will give your child a spare uniform for them to wear. So please wear a t shirt/rashie and a pair of pants (like trackies).

Will my child get hurt? Is it safe?

Safety is always our number one priority and we do our utmost to ensure everyone has a safe and fun experience. However Judo and BJJ are contact sports and injuries do occur.

How often do we need to come to class and when are your classes?

Our programs fit into almost any schedule. Some kids train once a week and others do three to four sessions a week. Although every child is different, we recommend 1 session a week for 6-7 years olds and then multiple sessions from aged anywhere between 8-10 years of age. Remember "the more you do, the better you get."

Please check our timetable in the tab above to see an up-to-date timetable.
